ORGANISMOS DE NACIONES UNIDAS LANZAN INFORME SOBRE LOS OBJETIVOS DE
DESARROLLO DEL MILENIO RELACIONADOS CON LA SALUD
La publicación fue coordinada por la CEPAL.
El próximo martes 20 de mayo en Costa Rica los máximos representantes de varios organismos especializados de las Naciones Unidas que trabajan en la región presentarán el informe Objetivos de desarrollo del Milenio. La progresión hacia el derecho a la salud en América Latina y el Caribe, a las 09:00 a.m. en el Hotel Radisson de San José.
El documento será presentado por José Luis Machinea, Secretario Ejecutivo de la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (CEPAL), y Lidieth Carballo, Viceministra de Salud del Gobierno de Costa Rica. Participarán en la ceremonia Rebeca Grynspan, Directora Regional del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (PNUD); Nils Kastberg, Director Regional del Fondo de las Naciones Unidas para la Infancia (UNICEF); Ricardo Sánchez, Director Regional del Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente (PNUMA); Marcela Suazo, Directora Regional del Fondo de Población de las Naciones Unidas; Socorro Gross, Subdirectora designada de la Organización Panamericana de la Salud (OPS/OMS); y Moni Pizani, Directora Regional del Fondo de Desarrollo de las Naciones Unidas para la Mujer (UNIFEM-Países Andinos).
En el documento, que fue coordinado por la CEPAL con la participación de la OPS, el Programa Mundial de Alimentos (PMA), el PNUD y el UNICEF, se revisan los logros y obstáculos hacia los Objetivos de desarrollo del Milenio relacionados con la salud para indagar sus causas y dimensionar los esfuerzos que se requieren para cumplir con los compromisos adquiridos.
Entre sus contenidos se analizan:
* La erradicación de la pobreza extrema y del hambre como marco de la situación de salud.
* Los Objetivos del desarrollo del Milenio relacionados con la salud: comparación de sus logros en los países de la región.
* La desnutrición crónica, sus determinantes y su incidencia en el cumplimiento de los objetivos relacionados con salud.
* El gasto de bolsillo en salud de los hogares: evidencia de desigualdades profundas.
* El financiamiento de los Objetivos de desarrollo del Milenio relativos a salud en América Latina y el Caribe.
* Los sistemas de salud ante los desafíos planteados por los objetivos de desarrollo del Milenio: principios orientadores para políticas de salud.
En la oportunidad también se presentará un análisis de la situación de Costa Rica.

A consultancy to the U.K. government has forwarded complaints about Microsoft’s licensing and interoperability practices to the European Commission (EC), according to an announcement issued by the Becta consulting group Monday.

College coaches are turning to webcams as a way to stay in touch with potential recruits to bypass new National Collegiate Athletic Association restrictions that forbid in-person visits to high school campuses during the spring evaluation period, according to a report from AP.

Education consultancy Eduventures has teamed up with The Campus Computing Project to kick off a new study focusing on online operations in higher education.
New Dartmouth Dorm Cluster Broadcasts Energy Usage to Students
Dartmouth College’s recently completed McLaughlin Cluster residence halls have been recognized by the United States Green Building Council for its environmental sustainability, winning Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design ( LEED ) gold certifications. The recognition makes the fifth LEED certification for Dartmouth buildings in four months. LEED certifications were recently awarded to two other residence halls as well as two academic facilities.
VBA To Return to Mac; Office 2008 SP1 Released
Microsoft Tuesday released Service Pack 1 for Office 2008 for Mac, the first major update to what the company called its most successful Mac Office launch in 19 years (in terms of sales volume). In a surprise move, Microsoft’s Mac Business Unit also announced that it plans to bring Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) back to the Mac platform with the next major release.
Study: Top Web Application Vulnerabilities Remain Unfixed
Organizations still aren’t doing enough to protect their data from Web application vulnerabilities, according to a study released Tuesday by security firm Cenzic. The study, Application Security Trends Report, Q1 2008, identified “1,409 unique published vulnerabilities for the first quarter of 2008, with Web technology vulnerabilities comprising 70 percent of the vulnerability volume….”
HP Officially Announces EDS Buy for $13.9 Billion
Tuesday morning Hewlett-Packard confirmed that it plans to acquire IT outsourcing services company Electronic Data Services for $13.9 billion, or $25 cash per share.

Linda Erlich (Case Western Reserve University) intitulada “`Nobody Knows’ and and the Resonant Gesture on Screen”, no Auditório do Centro de Produção Multimídia (CPM) de Escola de Comunicação da UFRj, no dia 20 de maio (terça-feira), das 15 às 16:30. A palestra será feita em inglês sem tradução e haverá exibição de trechos dos filmes discutidos. A entrada para a palestra é gratuita.
A palestra terá como ponto de partida o filme Ninguém Pode Saber (Nobody Knows) de HIrokadu Kore-eda e estabelecerá um diálogo com filmes como Ladrões de Bicicleta de Vittorio de Sica, Panthar Panchali de Satyajit Ray, O Espírito da Colméia de Victor Erice e O Sol é para Todos de Robert Mulligan, privilegiando os estudos dos gestos nestes filmes centrados no universo infantil e na sua passagem para o mundo adulto, tendo como partida discussões propostas pelo crítico André Bazin.
Linda Ehrlich é Escritora é Professor Associada de Japonês, Literatura Mundial e Cinema da Case Western Reserve University, co-editora de Cinematic Landscapes (University of Texas Press, 1994; Segunda edição 2000), antologia de artigos sobre a interface entre artes visuais e os cinema da China e do Japão, e autora de An Open Window: The Cinema of Víctor Erice (2007). Ela concluiu outros dois ivros que ainda não foram publicados : A Particular Slant of Light (prosa poética sobre paisagem e filme), Like Sculpture to the Blind (livros de poemas).
